The Texas Department of Transportation Houston District recently released a statement regarding the SH 146 Expansion Project.
“TxDOT is pleased to have reached a negotiated settlement with Union Pacific Railroad and right-of-way acquisitions are moving forward. TxDOT is diligently working towards having the SH 146 reconstruction project ready and available for letting this coming summer (2018).”
As right-of-way acquisitions continue, Seabrook will see an increase of businesses along the highway corridor close and eventually demolished. And while it is with a heavy heart that a few of our local favorites will not be relocated elsewhere in the city, we do have businesses that plan to stay.
The Seabrook House of Flowers will potentially move to NASA Parkway and Marios Flying Pizza will be relocating to NASA Parkway by the end of the year. Both Autozone and CVS will be moving to the Seabrook Town Center located by the Repsdorph Traffic Circle.
“The SH 146 expansion project provides some unique challenges for our community,” said Paul Chavez the city’s Director of Economic Development. “However, the expansion also brings a welcomed opportunity for new business growth along the highway’s corridor as well as bringing attention to commercial opportunities along NASA Parkway and other parts of our city.”
With the new highway comes a new look for Seabrook and while the Seabrook Economic Development Corporation actively markets available properties, they are also working with Seabrook City Council on the final design concept and renderings for the project. As outlined in Seabrook’s award-winning Master Comprehensive Plan, design standards are being created with guidance from SWA and TxDOT. These concepts will ensure that the new highway is not just concrete walls but aesthetically pleasing gateways that will make our community inviting and set apart from other communities around the Bay.
Preliminary design elements pending approval
“This project does not mean the end of Seabrook as we know it,” said Seabrook City Manager, Gayle Cook, “but rather the beginning of Seabrook as we envision it. Concrete will re-landscape what we have grown accustomed to seeing for decades; however, the community is the heartbeat of this town. We heard loud and clear many of the community’s ideas during the comprehensive master planning process and developed a list of priorities that staff is carrying forward to keep the elements that our residents and businesses have voiced.”
