Per Department Bylaws, new conditional members without prior certifications are required to complete an NFPA FFI academy within 1 year of membership. Firefighters with prior certifications, who provide documentation of this certification, are waived the requirement to complete an academy. All members, both prior certified and those who complete an academy, must complete a skills verification with the training officer prior to being assigned a “black hat” and authorization to conduct interior firefighting.
Upon completion of their basic certification, all members are encouraged to participate in expanding their skills through continued education, new training courses, professional development, and formal education. SVFD has a program that reimburses members for completion of BLS medical training (ECA/EMT-B), as well as certification as a TCFP Basic Firefighter. Additionally, the training officer can approve individual-specific training requests.
Members are also encouraged to achieve the position of driver/operator.
