Safety After the Storm

Safety is a top priority after a storm, here are some tips:

  • Return home only when authorities say it is safe.
  • Keep your belongings and property locked up and out of sight. Open garage doors with power washers, tools, lawn implements, and other items are just what criminals in trolling neighborhoods are looking for. Items you may have transferred to your vehicles during the hurricane, but haven’t yet removed are an easy target. Always keep your house and vehicle locked up.
  • Be aware of areas where floodwaters have receded and watch out for debris. Floodwaters often erode roads and walkways and leave nails and other sharp objects on roadways.
  • Although it may be tempting to go for a swim or a walk, don’t play in floodwaters! The water may contain chemicals or other contaminants and can hide sharp objects or other debris below the surface. Additionally, you may not be able to tell how deep the water is. Standing water can also be electrically charged by downed power lines.
  • Do not attempt to drive through areas that are still flooded. High water can damage your vehicle and wake from your vehicle passing through the water can damage homes.
  • Do not burn trash or debris.
  • Do not enter a building if it is still flooded or surrounded by floodwater.
  • Do not enter a building that has flooded until local building officials have inspected it for safety.
  • If you encounter solicitors inside the City of Seabrook, they must have an approved solicitor’s permit issued by the City of Seabrook and a state ID. Check that both permit and ID match. Please see the Disaster Scams page for more information on how to tell if a solicitor in Seabrook is legitimate.
