Weather Safety

Watch vs. Warning vs. Advisory

Watch

A watch indicates that conditions are favorable for a particular weather event to occur. Watches are issued ahead of potentially hazardous weather and serve as a heads-up to the possibility of dangerous conditions.

Warning

A warning is more serious than a watch. It means that dangerous weather is imminent or already occurring. Warnings are issued when severe weather is expected to pose a significant threat to life and property.

Advisory

An advisory is issued when hazardous weather conditions are expected, but the threat is less severe compared to a warning. Advisories often suggest precautions to minimize inconvenience or damage. They may include situations like a winter weather advisory for light snowfall or a coastal flood advisory for minor flooding.
