Hail Safety

Protecting Your Property from Hail

  • Bring any breakable outdoor decor under cover. This could be as simple as placing potted plants or outdoor glass furniture under a covered patio or in a garage.
  • If you are unable to put a vehicle in a garage or under a covered parking spot, you can cover your car in thick blankets. Tuck the edges of the blankets under the hood, inside the doors, and in windows. Make sure the blanket is tight and you still have access to your car doors.
  • Use vehicle floor mats or rugs to protect your windshield from hail. Put the carpeted side against the windshield and the rubbery side facing out.
  • You can cover outdoor furniture and vehicles in thick cardboard. Tie or bungee the cardboard in place.
  • For smaller items, you can also use towels as padding.
  • Do NOT use large rocks or duct tape to hold your cover in place. Wind may get under the blanket and lift the rocks with it, and duct tape can damage the paint job of your vehicle.
  • Protect your vehicle's side-view mirrors by remembering to fold them inwards.
