DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day provides a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse of medications. This event reflects the DEA’s commitment to Americans’ safety and health, encouraging the public to remove unneeded medications from their homes as a measure of preventing medication misuse and opioid addiction from ever starting.

DEA National Take Back FAQs

What can I turn over at the DEA Take Back event?

All solid-dosage pharmaceutical products and liquids in consumer containers can be accepted. Individuals should ensure that the cap is tightly sealed to prevent leakage.

Can I turn over illicit drugs?

No. Illicit substances such as marijuana or methamphetamine are not part of this initiative and will not be accepted.

Do you collect information on individuals disposing of medications?

No. This program is anonymous and all efforts will be made to protect the anonymity of individuals disposing of medications. No questions or requests for identification will be made.

Will you accept needles for disposal?

No. Intravenous solutions, injectables and syringes will NOT be accepted at this event.

Can I drop off liquid medication?

Yes. Liquid products should remain in their original containers with the cap tightly sealed to prevent leakage.

Do I need to take the medication out of its original container?

No. You may dispose of your medication in the original container if you choose, but you are encouraged to remove any identifying information from the label if applicable.
